Plot: During the turn of the 20th Century, the poor Mancuso family (headed by the widowed Salvatore, Vincenzo Amato), from Sicily, Italy, emigrates to the United States. They dream of the land of opportunity, where immigrants swim in white liquid, and coins fall from the sky. Salvatore takes his family, as well as his fiery and proud mother, Fortunata (Aurora Quattrocchi). While on the ship to America, Salvatore meets the British Lucy (Charlotte Gainsbourg). Lucy is quickly noted by many of the men for her sexuality. For reasons unknown, Lucy wants to be married quickly and before arriving to Ellis Island. Without much struggle, the two are married. Upon arriving at Ellis Island, the families realize that their trials and tribulations have just begun. The whole family is put through extreme and humiliating trials, both mentally and physically. Not all of the family members are prepared for these tasks, especially Pietro (Filippo Pucillo), who is deaf and mute.
